Kinda in the guise of “never meet your heroes” but different. Is there a car you once was a fan of/liked/fancied/ect. or anything of the sort, that after some sorta online experience (social media, youtube, Top Gear, Fifth Gear, ect.) you now have a bit of disdain or dislike towards?

Here’s mine. There is only one car and one reason with that car I have dislike for it, all in one picture...

Now when the Huracan first came out, I was in love with the car inside and out. Like a modern-retro V10 Countach to me, if there was ever a modern Lambo (I CAN DREAM DAMMIT) I aspired to own and/or drive, this was the one. Better looking and probably better driving than an Aventador, this is it.

Then HE bought one and then I met HIM... Now when I see Huracans around town (1-3 a week nowadays), I appreciate the sound, design, and interior that I still have yet to sit in; but then that guy pops in my head and I’m Back to looking at 911s, Boxsters/Caymans, and R8s for future dreams. ¯\_()_/¯

The internet hates my car (WK Grand Cherokee), but I don’t give a shit. It’s a quick, v8 powered comfortable 4x4 with an interior that really isn’t any worse than what everyone else was doing in the mid 2000s that I bought for less than $5k OTD. Fuck ‘em.

if there’s any consolation, these morons usually end up broke because they blew all of their money on an expensive car they discover they can’t afford to maintain.

Kia Stinger.

I’ve seen a total of two in real life (in a town completely covered with Kiundai/Genesis vehicles) and would otherwise have been like “Wow, cool!” if not for the endless months/years of hype that preceded it.

I blame Oppo. And the fact that I usually see it next to a Forte on a dealer lot with over 1,000 balloons and neon signs. So close, Kia.

Not so much an online “experience” as it has been education , but the late-model Camaros have been ruined for me. In a good way, I guess.

At first, I was absolutely dazzled by the concept shown in Transformers. But all this talk about the visibility issue has helped me realize just how much of a dealbreaker that is for me. I don’t care how cool it looks- if I can’t see where I’m going when I back out of a parking spot, it’s no good.

The same could be said for a lot of supercars. Thanks to the whole discussion surrounding the Camaro, there are a lot of supercars that I’m totally content to admire from afar. They look cool, but even if I had the money, I’d refuse to own one. Lean awkwardly out the open door of a Countach just to see where I’m going? No thanks, I’ll just hang a poster of the car on my wall instead. S omeone else can deal with that thing. I’m sure it’s a blast to drive forward, but I’m not going to pretend that checking my blind spots isn’t part of my life too.

I have to agree with this, but mostly because of the owners attitude on YouTube and their message board.

They talk about street racing and beating hellcats, GTRs, Z06's, etc.

I wouldn’t say ruined, but the internet did give me perspective as to why giving endless attention to the latest supercars may not be the best idea. It’s just fuelling the egos of a few peacocks, I’m more inclined to learn about the design and stories of these vehicles over the whole perceived image of them. Nowadays the cars that get me excited are more attainable, or just flat-out different .

That’s the last car I would’ve ever thought of. I don’t see them often, but I think of them as budget Audi A7s/S7s in a good way, especially in that lovely gray.

Honestly, any car that YouTube owners boast or spam videos about in that manner, I dislike. The Huracan is just the most not able for me, GT-Rs too. Special mention to all the SRTs, and Z06s!!

Any supercar and/or hypercar. I’ve always felt their rarity was part of the allure. Sure, you had a poster of one on your wall, but outside of videogames, chances seemed slim that you’d ever see one in real life. Now it seems I can’t enter the Chicago metro area without being greeted by some dream level Lambo or Macca. It seems to be even worse with the Internet because of annoying YouTubers and constant hype machines. Shoot, even videogames are falling for the trick.

I don’t feel wowed by any of those cars anymore because I see them so frequently and shoved down my throat by their YouTube/Instagram influencers. I’d rather see an original Corvair or some tuner build than whatever is the newest thing Ferrari and Lamborghini has.

The hellcat(s). Admittedly, I didn’t have much interest to begin with as the challenger and charger are cars that I don’t care for in any form. All of the 707HP!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Stuff just turned them all the way off for me.

I couldn’t agree more. What I’ve noticed that seems to be going on with some of the more overzealous Stinger owners is that they feel like they have something they need to prove. They jump out of their seat to defend the car at every opportunity and tend to exaggerate its capabilities.

The obvious answer in my eyes is the Tesla model S. What should have been a respectable if a little raw edged luxury sedan became the poster child for look at this reaction videos and how much can we gush.

Being said, all the coverage of reaction just to react without informing anything just nauseate me. Especially the “bought an expensive thing suuuuuper cheap, see whats gone wrong”

Bonus points to the E30 M3 and aircooled porches. Making anything more expensive by just association.

If I had to choose a few off the top of my head? The Lamborghini Aventador and Huracan as well as the Nissan GT-R are probably my poster children of “Internet ruined” cars. There are just so many of them around and I feel nothing when I see them.

Edit: On second thought, I take back what I said about Maccas (McLarens), I still give those drivers a big thumbs up.

Porsche 911s are also very popular around here, but I love them like I love Corvettes, so they’re always a welcome sight to me.

Now to be fair, I’ve got a soft spot for the lesser cars in the lineup (RTs/TAs/Daytonas and Scat Packs. Anything higher and I simply have no fucks to give. Especially when they’re doing what the 911 does offering a new trim or model like a special flavor; only the 911 does it better.

I know someone with a scat pack charger and it sounds great! The hellcat just doesn’t for something with 707 horsepower, at least to me.

Granted, my opinion of them was not very high to start with, mostly because of the owners, and it was not going to be high on my personal shopping list. But then I did extensive reading on numerous PHEVs when my dad decided to replace his disintegrating E-class with one. I’m 1,800 miles away, and he couldn’t wait for my visit in September to get a new vehicle , so we had to trade reviews back and forth over the ‘net instead in order to determine the best choice for his needs. Looking at the competition, the Prius seems to be ugly,  slow, tinny, expensive, poorly equipped and not terribly rewarding to drive. Needless to say, he purchased something else, and if I was in the same situation I'd probably do the same.

I can claim the internet ruined all supercars for me. Mostly the “What it costs to own” articles. I think I was a lot more able to ignore the expense and dream before I was able to see what things like tires and brake jobs cost on those things. I still like looking at them at shows and if the owner is a real car guy I love shooting the breeze but I just don’t covet them like I use to.

I also rather dig the facelift 392 Chargers. The styling works, and FCA put them on some nice deep dish wheels that really conveys a sense of purpose.

He is that very Parker...Luckily he moved back to California a year or so ago. You should come out to Pasteiner’s sometime. More quirky and classic cars with good people to chat with than say M1's or Lingenfelter’s where it’s hp wars and who’s got the most expensive car.

Parker will not be one of those people since he comes from a Billionaire family. Most people on YT though..........No idea but we’ll see what happens.

Porsches. Specifically the 911.

When I was growing up, I really had a thing for the 944. As I got older (still in my teens) I started having a big want for a 911. Pretty much any 911. Slee k, sexy, fast , and classy.

Then came Top Gear, a nd it took my dreams away.

Yes, the 911 is still all of those things, but particularly the episodes where the guys do track days or classic car stuff, it is just endless 911s. The 911 went from being something special to being the Camry of cool cars. The go to. Plentiful and no longer special.

( Then, to add insult to injury, the prices went insane right as I was getting into project cars.)

I still like the 944 and the 914, but the 911 is ruined for me.

To be fair it’s really just the FP and the commenters endless and unfunny even at the beginning jokes about them. I’m so sick of the jokes that its tarnishing my opinion of the car. What really did it in was my experience with my 2001 Expedition and crucially my 2005 Crown Victoria. The Expedition had a transmission blow out, chewed through tie rods left and right, sunroof leaked, and shot a plug out of the block (common problem). The Crown Vic was the worst car I’ve ever experienced, the seat would dislocate ribs in my back and I’m still having issues from it. At 65,000 miles it also had some driveline slack, had 4 blown shocks and the broken seat. So my opinion of Fords has drastically dropped. Especially compared to my experiences with my Corolla and Camry which both were or are rock solid so far except for normal maintenance. Also I dented the trunk lid on my step mom’s 2017 Mustang Convertible by lightly leaning on it. Even though I could get A-Plan through her I would hesitate on another Ford.

That said your mileage may vary. I like how the mustang looks, I like that its RWD with IRS , I like that you can see out of it much better than the competition. I like the engine and transmission options. If it weren’t for my past experience it would be a serious contender for my future “fun” car. But then again I won’t be making much in Public Health so I may be a Camry lifer.
